Individual counselling
Regardless of your stage of life, all people experience periods of challenge, transition and complexities. Sometimes these experiences can leave you feeling confused, stuck, alone, anxious and depressed. This can result in being overwhelmed and unsure of where to get help. My goal is to provide a safe space to explore these issues and offer various services to promote wellbeing and sound mental health management. I use an integrated counselling and psychotherapy approach using various modalities including but not limited to: person-centred therapy, body-orientated therapy, emotionally-focus therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, internal family systems therapy, Bowen's family systems, and many others.
Below is the list of common concerns that can be explored in individual counselling:
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Stress, burnout and fatigue
- Trauma and Abuse
- Behavioural concerns (E.g., anger management, risk-taking etc.)
- Grief and loss
- Sexuality and gender identity
- Self-harm and suicidal ideation
- Self-esteem issues
- Addiction
- Developmental life stage changes and challenges
- Life direction
- Relationship issues
- Cultural and spiritual direction challenges
- And many others.
Often, people can struggle with a combination of concerns rather than just a specific one. Counselling can be a helpful way to organise your concerns and work through them at your own pace. Together, we can explore ways to make sense of your experience and bring positive change to your life.
FAQs
How do I know if I need individual counselling?
There is a misconception that counselling is only for people who are experiencing extreme circumstances or mental health challenges. In reality, counselling can address a range of issues, and no concern is too big or too small. Your feelings, wellbeing and personal goals are important. Common reasons people seek counselling include but are not limited to: relationship challenges, career issues, lack of direction or purpose, and managing harassment and bullying. It can also assist in addressing uncomfortable body-mind sensations like heart racing, shortness of breath, feeling emotionally numb, a busy scattered mind, and many others. If you are unsure if individual counselling is the right decision, contact me via the "contact" webpage. I will endeavour to answer any of your questions or concerns.
What happens in individual counselling?
Individual counselling is available both online and face-to-face. The aim, at the commencement of counselling, is to ensure you feel heard and understood. The first session will focus on your counselling needs and answer any questions you may have about counselling. Many people find that talking through their challenges is beneficial and provides greater insight into the struggles they are experiencing. In addition to talking things through, specific guidance, strategies and interventions can help support individuals going through challenging times. I aim to provide a safe, respectful and collaborative space in which you can be supported in exploring and working through the issues and challenges you face.
How long will individual counselling take and how much does it cost?
Individual counselling sessions usually go for one hour. Everybody is different, so it can be hard to predict how many individual counselling sessions are required. On average, 15 to 20 weekly or fortnightly sessions are required for most people to see some improvement. However, this number will vary depending on the person and the complexity of the issue. For cost information, please look at the contact page to view pricing.
What should I do if I'm nervous about starting individual counselling?
Feeling nervous about starting individual counselling is a common feeling. You may feel like the problem is so large and complex that you find it hard to express what is going on. Or perhaps you know something is wrong in your life but are unsure how to express it. It's important to remind yourself that these are normal thoughts and feelings. For most people, the hardest part of counselling is making the decision to book the first appointment. You can take that first step by making contact via the "contact" webpage or via the "contact or booking an appointment" button below.
